Clinical Pharmacy Programs
The clinical pharmacy program at The Medical Center of Plano is second to none. Pharmacists assist the medical and nursing staff in providing optimal care for all patients. The progressive clinical program at The Medical Center of Plano:
- Monitors patients' kidney function to ensure that medications are being dosed appropriately
- Converts intravenous products to oral equivalents in an effort to allow patients to leave the hospital earlier and to decrease the risk of intravenous line infections
- Closely monitors Coumadin (warfarin) dosing
- Makes available an anticoagulation specialist to optimize Coumadin (warfarin) dosing
- Educates patients on Coumadin (warfarin) and address questions/concerns of any medication patients are receiving
- Assists with strict control of blood sugar
- Optimizes dosing of antibiotics to increase potency and decrease risk of an adverse event
- Offers a lipid clinic for patients to receive one-on-one diet and exercise counseling from a highly qualified nurse and meet with a pharmacist to initiate, adjust, and monitor lipid therapy
- Provides a medication class for Cardiac Rehab patients where a pharmacist explains all medications and answer any questions
- Educates community through a "Ask a Pharmacist" table at hospital events where medication related questions and concerns can be addressed
- Trains PharmD students from 6 different schools
- Makes available a pain management specialist to optimize the control of pain in our hospitalized patients
