NEUROSPECIALIST NAMED AS SURGERY OVERSEER

PLANO, Texas (July 21, 2011)The Medical Center of Plano has announced the appointment of John R. Tompkins, M.D., as Chief of Surgery for a two-year term. Dr. Tompkins previously served as his department’s vice chief.

“We are very fortunate to have a physician of Dr. Tompkins’s caliber fill this important seat on our Executive Committee,” says Troy A. Villarreal, FACHE, president and chief executive officer at The Medical Center of Plano. “His strong leadership, collaborative, and technical skills will be invaluable to us.”

Born in Bloomington, Ill., in 1963, Dr. Tompkins received his medical degree in 1990 from the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. After an internship in general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, he remained at Baylor through the summer of 1995 completing an internship in internal medicine and training in neurology.

Dr. Tompkins then spent four additional years as a neurological surgery resident at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. In 1999, he moved to North Texas to enter private practice, and joined the medical staff at The Medical Center of Plano in October of that year.

Dr. Tompkins is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
